Part B - Field Trip
Make me a Photo Tour or Narrated Video Tour of your visit to the Capliano Salmon Hatchery which is located on the Capilano River in Capilano River Regional Park. Admission to this popular attraction is free.
Bring a camera, hiking shoes and spend a couple of hours here. Take photo's and notes and create a brochure, power point, video or word-doc that walks me through your experience and learning. You can also bring your photo's and present this "tour" to me orally. You will be graded on your expressed knowledge and understanding of 1. The salmon life cycle 2. Critical Issues for our salmon stocks and 3. Capilano Salmon Hatcheries involvement in salmon preservation. (/5 each, plus /5 for the overall presentation of your work)
Visit the fish hatchery interpretive centre and take the self-guided tour. Learn about and see fish develop from eggs to juvenile stage, when they are released to the river in spring. It's a colourful and fascinating process.
Then go outside, and enjoy the many hiking trails. You won't need to walk very far to small local bridges, where during spawning season you can see the bright red fish jump and fight their way upstream. Coho salmon return to the Hatchery over a long period lasting from June and December. Include this in your "tour" also.
