Term 2 Badge Ideas
Your Assignments this term are focused on Climate Change, Human Population issues, and Atmospheric Pollution. We will study land and aquatic pollution in term 3 which connect to badge work with our bees, gardens, orchard, beach, invasive species etc.
These are just some ideas. As you can see they can be expanded or simplified to meet your interests and working with a partner or team is encouraged.

Focusing on the issues of Climate change and due to the fact that outdoor activities are limited at this time of year, here are some suggestions for project work:
- Adaptation is Natural - Make a plan to adapt your lifestyle in a way that will make a meaningful impact towards reducing climate change and the local environment. Research the issue both globally and locally, make a pledge, document your progress in a written, photo or video log.
- Me to We - Like the suggestion above, choose an issue that is impacting climate and environment. Do your research both globally and locally, and then create a campaign aimed at creating change within the community. This could be focused on the school, or the district level and could utilize such resources as posters in community locations, video message shown to students, outreach to classrooms at elementary schools…
- Informed Voter - Being that you will be of voting age before long, here is an opportunity to research Canadian politics as they relate to the environment. You could research the stance of the different political parties without prejudice, look at historical and current perspectives of government, and examine what our local district, province and/or country are doing towards combating climate change. Host an information seminar for other interested students to learn from your research.
- Global citizenship - Many of the places in the world that will be impacted by climate change the most are least equipped to cope. Take a broad approach or refine your topic of interest but with a global rather than local focus. Create an informative display for one of the display cabinets at school to share your findings with our school community.
- Sustainable neighbors – find some local companies or districts within the province/country that are setting examples for living sustainable. Do an expose on your companies by conducting interviews with persons within those establishments. http://carbonengineering.com in Squamish, CarToGo,
- Making it better – do you have a favorite store, restaurant, hobby etc. that you feel guilty about because you are aware that it is not very sustainable. Well cure that guilt by being the voice of change. This is a very person project but past examples include implementing fees for bags in stores, changing take out materials from Styrofoam or plastics or recyclable alternatives, creating a carpool & equipment swap network for a sports league etc.
- Textiles – this is one that I would love to see take traction. The textile industry is one of extreme waste in a world of seasonal trends and extravagance. How cool would it be to have a second hand store at the school for students to exchange/sell their gently used clothing?
- Speak Easy – work with the Ambleside youth center and organize a series of documentary dialogues on the topics of sustainability or host a community conference with a guest speaker and break out groups on an issue of local importance.
- Job Perspectives – research some fields of employment within the Sustainable sector and research the education, salary, and job descriptions. Interview persons who have jobs of this nature to connect with the community.
- Metro Vancouver – Visit metrovancouver.org. Go on a tour or two, lean about waste, water, and energy in our backyard.
You are not limited to these suggestions. The possibilities are endless.
