If you are Interested in Agriculture, Gardening or Tech/Programming, this course plan may appeal to you.
Choose Option A, B or C . This will give you all of the assignment and some of the project credits you need to a complete year. Your other projects should be related to one or more of the other sustainability topics (Fisheries, Forestry, Mining, Energy)

Option A - The Urban Farmer:
Get a sense of the local agricultural scene by: 1. Reading Urban Agriculture by David Tracey, or, take a tour of three different local urban farms (ex SOLEfood, UBC farms, Loutet Farm, Terra Nova etc) 3. Come up with a list of suggestions for our garden based on what you saw at these farms |

Option C - Greenhouse Tech Design
1. Attend Robotic club meetings to learn programming starting in Term 1 2. Design a system for monitoring daily greenhouse conditions |
Assignment set 2 for Term 2 - Project Go Greenhouse Go

These Term 2 Assignments will be done in groups starting on must be completed by February 28th
Option A - Compost to Soil
1. Volunteer and learn how to be part of the composting collection process of WVSS 2. Help with the "harvest" of our compost product to be used for growing our spring planting projects 3. 2. Design a plan of how you might increase the amount of compost materials making it into our collection bins |

Option C - Greenhouse Tech
1. Create an an open document where people can record the daily greenhouse conditions (inside/outside temp, humidity, barometric pressure) **Note: this is something that you could eventually automate Project Extension Potential - Set a schedule to take your readings (each person might want to be in charge of one day a week) and create a graphical analysis of your data |
Projects for Term 2 - Your Choice
You already have Project level credits from Term 1, but you need a total of at least 7 credits by the end of Term 2.
Project Proposals must be approved prior to commencing work, and your summaries must be completed by February 28th

Term 3 - Assignment #3 - Career Presentation and Term Project
Assignment set #3 for Term 3 - Sustainable BC Essays or Field Studies

Option A - Forest Ecology Walk
Join me on a hike into our backyard and take a look at the history of logging on the North-Shore as well as our local diversity |
Option B - Beach Combing Sustainably
Join me in a walk along the beach to examine the ecosystem and the observable biotic and biotic components at play |
Option C - Compost Marketing
Work with the composting team and their weekly collections. Help them implement a plan to increase direct bin collection rates. |

Choose an option below, customize it, and these projects will be awarded a level 2-3 depending on your proposal and the total scope.

Option A - Greenhouse baskets:
1. Attend a demonstration of hanging basket making with a West Vancouver garden club member Level 2- Create, and care for your hanging basket. During the growing season, keep record periodically about how your plants are doing and what you are doing to help them along and tell me what you would change next time and why. Level 3- Scientific Question. Design your own Purpose, Hypothesis and Procedure utalizing a hanging basket and complete it with data, discussion and conclusion. |
Option B - Greenhouse Seedlings
1. Raise seedlings for a seedling sale. (Show knowledge of proper growing medium,light, and watering) OR 2. Use rooting hormones to propagate plants from cuttings Level 2 - Keep record periodically about how your plant is doing and what you are doing to help it along. Tell me why you planted the plants you did and cared for them as you did and tell me what you would change next time and why. Level 3- Scientific Question. Design your own Purpose, Hypothesis and Procedure for your seedlings/plants and complete it with data, discussion and conclusion. |
Option C - Growing Edibles:
1. Research four plants that could be grown and harvested during the school year the plant, care for, and harvest a crop of each. Level 2 - During the growing season, keep record periodically about how your plant is doing and what you are doing to help it along. Tell me why you planted the plants where you did. (talk about soil types, drainage, sun exposure, companion plants etc) Lastly, tell me what should be planted in the spot you used next year and why. Level 3 - Scientific Question. Design your own Purpose, Hypothesis and Procedure for your veggies and complete it with data, discussion and conclusion. Veggie Gardening for Beginners |
Option D - Automate the Greenhouse Tech
Level 2 - Automate the greenhouse tech equipment to take readings on a set schedule and execute Level 3 - Scientific Question. Design your own Purpose, Hypothesis and Procedure using your tech set up and complete it with data, discussion and conclusion. |
